Position Summary
The Communications & Public Affairs Specialist is responsible for developing accurate, timely, and strategic communications for public, governmental, and community audiences. This includes crafting press releases, statements, meeting summaries, social and digital content, and visual materials that help inform communities and strengthen public understanding.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer, proactive communicator, and curious listener who is comfortable attending meetings, public hearings, and events to capture and distill essential information. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to handle communications that may be time-sensitive. Basic design skills are needed to support visual content creation.
Evening and weekend availability is part of the role based on client or event needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, talking points, and public communications.
- Attend meetings, public hearings, and community events to capture key insights and translate them into press materials, summaries, and digital content.
- Write, edit, and manage content for websites, newsletters, social media, and internal communications.
- Coordinate with government agencies, elected officials, media partners, and internal client teams.
- Create basic visual content to support messaging using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Maintain consistent, accurate messaging aligned with brand standards and communication goals.
- Manage communications calendars, deadlines, and workflows—including occasional evening or weekend coverage.
- Support crisis or time-sensitive communications as needed with a calm, solutions-focused approach.
- Uphold Dooley & Associates’ reputation for clear, dependable, and community-minded communication.
Preferred Experience
- 3+ years in communications, public affairs, government, nonprofit, or related fields.
- Experience working with or alongside government entities, public agencies, or community organizations.
- Familiarity with media relations and public information practices.
- Confidence navigating multiple deadlines in a dynamic environment.
